Still a Work in Progress

Still a Work in Progress by Jo Knowles is a novel about a little brother’s perspective on an eating disorder his sister is going through.  The characters still-a-workare probably the best part of the story, as they are all well rounded, interesting and memorable.  Although the book might seem sad and disturbing there are many lighthearted moments that balance the sad parts out.  The only real problem with the entire book is the sometimes foreign concepts to do with the setting.  The teachers in the middle school where most of the novel takes place, treat the kids like community members instead of students, which is original but isn’t explained very well.  Otherwise this is a well written story with realistic characters and a unique perspective on a crippling issue. – E.
